How to Add Line Breaks to Instagram Captions (That Actually Stay)
Why Instagram squashes your paragraphs into one block, and the two-minute fix that keeps your spacing.

Why your line breaks disappear
Instagram tends to collapse completely empty lines. You write a caption with a blank line between each paragraph, paste it in, and it posts as one dense block. Two things usually cause it: the empty line has nothing on it at all, or the line before it ends in a space, which some keyboards and apps add without you noticing.
The result matters more than it looks. People skim captions on a small screen; a wall of text gets skipped, while short paragraphs with space between them get read.
The fix: put something invisible on the empty line
If an empty line contains a character that looks like a space but isn't treated as whitespace, Instagram keeps it. The most reliable one is the Braille blank (U+2800). It displays as empty space on phones and computers, and it counts as one character toward the 2,200-character limit.
You can do this by hand by copying the character into each empty line, but it is fiddly on a phone. The Instagram Caption Formatter on this site does it for you: write your caption with normal blank lines, press Copy, and paste it into Instagram.
Step by step
- •Write your caption with the spacing you want, including blank lines between paragraphs.
- •Paste it into the Instagram Caption Formatter and leave "Keep blank lines" switched on.
- •Check the preview to see what shows before "more".
- •Press Copy for Instagram and paste it into the caption box in the app.
- •Before you share, scroll through the caption in the app's preview to confirm the spacing.
Other things that break caption formatting
- •Spaces at the end of a line. Delete them, or let the formatter trim them.
- •Pasting from apps that use special line-break characters (some notes and document apps). Paste into a plain text field first.
- •Editing a posted caption on desktop. The spacing can change; re-check it on your phone.
- •Dot or dash "spacers" on their own lines. They work, but they look dated next to clean blank lines.
Formatting that makes captions easier to read
Spacing is only half the job. Keep paragraphs to one or two sentences, use a line break before your call to action so it stands alone, and put hashtags after a blank line so they read as a footer. Use emoji as punctuation — at the end of a line to set the tone — rather than scattered through sentences.
Before
I tried batch cooking for a month and honestly it changed everything because I saved so much time and money and I didn't have to think about dinner every night so here's what I learned #mealprep #batchcooking
After
I batch cooked for a month. It saved me 4 hours a week. 🍲 The trick wasn't the recipes — it was cooking only 3 bases and mixing them. Want the 3 bases? Comment "bases" 👇 #mealprep #batchcooking
Why it works: Same story, but split into short lines with space between them. The first line carries a specific result, each paragraph has one idea, and the call to action stands on its own.
