Clean hashtags

Your cleaned list appears here.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or saved.

How to use it

  1. 1.Paste a caption, a saved hashtag list, or tags separated by spaces, commas, or new lines. Words without # are turned into tags too.
  2. 2.Check the counts: total, unique, duplicates removed, and any tags that had to be fixed.
  3. 3.Pick the platform you are posting to and see whether your set fits.
  4. 4.Copy the cleaned list in one line or one tag per line.

Why hashtag lists go wrong

Most creators keep hashtag sets in a notes app and copy them from post to post. Over time those lists collect duplicates (#travel and #Travel count as the same tag), broken tags (#self-care stops at the hyphen and becomes #self), and tags that silently exceed a platform limit so the whole set is ignored or the post is rejected.

This tool fixes the mechanical problems: it treats tags as case-insensitive when finding duplicates, removes characters that break a hashtag (spaces, hyphens, most punctuation), and tells you exactly what it changed.

How many hashtags each platform allows

Instagram allowed up to 30 hashtags per post for years, and in late 2025 announced a much lower cap; at the time of writing, using 3–5 relevant tags keeps you safely within either rule and matches what Instagram itself recommends. TikTok has no small fixed hashtag cap, but tags share the caption's character limit, and 3–5 relevant tags is the common practice. On YouTube, if a video has more than 15 hashtags, YouTube ignores all of them, and the first three can appear above the title.

LinkedIn and X have no hard hashtag limit, but both audiences tend to read long hashtag blocks as spam; 1–3 is the norm.

Count is the easy part — relevance is the work

A small set of tags that describe the post precisely (topic, format, audience) usually beats a long list of huge generic tags like #love or #instagood, where your post is buried within seconds. Mix one or two broad tags with a few specific ones that a real person interested in this post would actually search or follow.

Check every tag in the app before you rely on it. Some tags are restricted or used for unrelated content, and using them can do more harm than good.

Frequently asked questions

Are #Travel and #travel the same hashtag?

Yes. Hashtags are not case-sensitive, so this tool treats them as duplicates and keeps the first spelling you used.

Why did my hashtag with a hyphen get changed?

Platforms end a hashtag at the first hyphen, space, or most punctuation marks, so #self-care is read as #self. The cleaner joins the parts (#selfcare) so the tag works as you meant it.

How many hashtags should I use on Instagram?

Instagram's limit has changed over time; at the time of writing, 3–5 relevant hashtags is both safe and what Instagram recommends.

How many hashtags can a YouTube video have?

Up to 15. If a video has more than 15, YouTube ignores all of them.
